Free Fun Weekend - June 1 and 2
All DNR-owned properties participate in Free Fun Weekend during the first full weekend in June. All vehicle admission pass fees and trail pass fees on state-operated designated state trails are waived for Free Fun Weekend.


  • May 12 at 10:00 AM: Initial tilling of the soil for the Indigenous Garden at Aztalan.

  • June 1 at 12:00 PM: Aztalan Ho-Chunk Garden Planting. Vehicle admission fee is waived for Free Fund Weekend.

    Please join the Friends of Aztalan State Park on Sunday, June 1st as we welcome Hinu Smith, Executive Director of the Ho-Chunk Nation’s Agriculture Department as we learn to plant a traditional Ho-Chunk Garden at Aztalan State Park.

    The program will begin at 12:00 PM (Noon) by the Friends of Aztalan State Park Interpretive Trailer and park shelter located at the middle parking lot.

    Hinu Smith will explain the cultural significance of the Ho- Chunk Nation and other heritage seeds and the history of Ho- Chunk agricultural practices past and present.

    We invite the public to help us plant Ho-Chunk Speckled Corn, Hubbard Squash, a bean variety (TBD), and a Ruramuri Sunflower (Tarahumara White Sunflower). The Raramuri variety is a variety from Northern Mexico and was gifted to the Ho-Chunk.

    Also learn about ancient agricultural practices at Aztalan during the Mississippian Period with educational display boards and ancient artifacts on display such as the Mill Creek Chert Hoe and its significance.

  • June 1 at 2:00 PM First Free Public Tour of the season, highlighting new archaeological discoveries. Vehicle admission fee is waived for Free Fund Weekend.

  • June 14 ay 1:00 PM: Annual Membership Meeting at the park.

  • June 20: Annual Solstice Party welcoming summer.

  • June 21, 22: Help the DNR to remove invasive species.

  • July: Aztalan Day tour with Lake Mills-Aztalan Historical Society.

  • September: Native American Day featuring traditional drumming, singing, and dances. This year with extra native arts and crafts, especially for our younger participants.


The events and tours are free, but visitors will have to pay a State Park admission fee or have an annual State Park admission sticker for their vehicle. Fees can be paid at the park or online at https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/admission.
