Annual Membership Meeting and Dinner

  • Hoard Historical Museum 401 Whitewater Avenue Fort Atkinson, WI, 53538 United States (map)

The Friends of Aztalan State Park will have its annual dinner meeting on the evening of Saturday January 27 at the Hoard Museum, 401 Whitewater Ave, Fort Atkinson with an important and interesting program. The event will begin at 6:30 PM with a buffet dinner served at 7:00 which will feature Spinach Lasagna and Sausage Lasagna as main dishes accompanied by fruit cups, vegetables, salad, and yellow sheet cake.

Dinner will be followed by a brief annual business meeting and then a presentation by Dr. John Richards (University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee) on first ever remote sensing project over the entire ancient town that provides details of what major archaeological features still lay underground. The project was recently conducted by Ohio Valley Archaeology, Inc. in cooperation with the University Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Department of Natural Resources, and the Friends of Aztalan State Park. The remote sensing technology used is called a gradiometer that can detect subtle disturbances in the soil. A map is being prepared from this data showing subsurface disturbances that can be related to walls, houses, storage and refuse pits, and possibly even graves/cemeteries. This information will invaluable in guiding future research and management at the site.

The Friends of Aztalan State Park funded a part of the project with a special donation generously provided by Friends of Aztalan board member Marifran Cataldi specifically for this purpose. We plan to make a the results of the remote sensing survey a center piece in the proposed new visitor center.

The just published 2nd edition of the popular Indian Mounds of Wisconsin written by archaeologists Robert Birmingham and Amy Rosebrough will also be available for purchase and signing at the meeting. The books contains exciting new archaeological information including for Aztalan and other Mississippian sites in Wisconsin. The cover photo features the platform mounds at Aztalan and was taken by former Friends of Aztalan president Dan Seurer. The cost of the book is $25
